Lower Bills and Backup Power — Even If You Rent.

44 million US renters can now cut their electricity bills and build energy resilience through plug-in solar. Here's everything you need to know — from your legal rights to talking to your landlord.

Your Path to Plug-In Solar

Four steps from "curious" to "installed." Most renters complete this in 2–4 weeks.

Renter FAQ

Do I need my landlord's permission?

It depends on your state. In Utah (the only state with an enacted plug-in solar law), landlords cannot prohibit qualifying installations. Virginia, California, Colorado, and 21 other states have active bills that would add similar protections. In all other states, you'll need to negotiate with your landlord — we provide a letter template to help.

Will it damage my apartment?

Properly installed plug-in solar systems require no structural modifications. Panels mount on balcony railings using non-penetrating clamps. The only connection to your apartment is a standard 120V outlet — the same as any appliance.

What if I move?

Plug-in solar systems are fully portable. You can take your system with you when you move. Most systems weigh 15–25kg and can be moved by two people. This is one of the key advantages over rooftop solar.

Is it safe?

Systems certified to UL 3700 meet rigorous US safety standards. The UL 3700 standard specifically covers plug-in solar systems and is required by Utah's HB 340 — and is expected to be required by California's SB 868 and other pending state laws. Always look for UL 3700 certification when purchasing.

How much will I actually save?

Our honest estimate is $200–$500/year for a typical 800W system, with a 5–9 year payback. Note: the federal 30% ITC (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025 and no longer applies to residential installations. Check your state's incentive programs — several states offer credits of 15–35%. Use our calculator for a location-specific estimate including any active state incentives.

What if my building doesn't have a balcony?

Ground-floor units can use patio space. Some systems can mount on window ledges. If you have no outdoor space, community solar programs may be a better option — you subscribe to a share of a larger solar installation.

Important: Always check your specific lease agreement

Even in states where plug-in solar is legally permitted, your specific lease may have provisions that affect installation. Review your lease carefully and consult a tenant rights attorney if you're unsure. This information is educational, not legal advice.
